Nothing fancy, I just figured I would share my SoT kayak and Canoe rack. I just acquired a second SoT ( Native Slayer Propel) and needed to add to my existing, side of the house storage unit. After messing with some ideas I added tensioned wire for strength (under Canoe) and a hinge accessed bit to stack the 'yaks. It still needs a little polishing and tweaking and I still need to figure out some sort of covering for it, but until then, this will do.
Keep `em both out of the warm sunlight. Eventually, they'll deform from the warmth.
We house our 17-foot Current Designs ocean boats (which are fiberglass) in our lower garages, encased in covers, but we baby those sleek ocean voyagers!
I wouldn't worry about the plastic boats, especially on the wet side. When I get off of working on rivers my kayak sometimes ends up in weird places. On the Rogue we hit 117 in June - sometimes my boat is on my vehicle rack between launches, sometimes it is sitting in the rigging yard, maybe in the sun, maybe not. In any case if a PE boat takes a set it will recover. However your grab loops and other nylon trim and accessory pieces will degradate quickly. I've had plastic WW kayaks hanging in my yard for years, I hose them off and go paddle them. Metal grab loops? No prob. Nylon grab loops? I consider UV degredation of the material because that is a rescue point. I don't want a swimmer to grasp a grab loop and have it rip out.
What I would be concerned about is your skin coat Kevlar boat. Kevlar will degredate with exposure to UV (as will PE but at a much, much slower rate) and become britttle. I can't tel from the photo but it looks like it might be a Kevlar / core boat. If so, even more reason to cover it. I had a e-no-nah Advantage that I guided out of for a few decades in Northern Ontario. After being in the weather that long it showed signs of moisture infiltration in the foam core by evidence of mold forming under the skin coat.
Maybe a quick and easy shed roof to cover at least the Kevlar boat?
Good call, yea she is Kevlar. Had it for 20+ years and its been to Vegas for 8 of those so plenty of sun. I was planning on configuring a covering, I just have to figure out how to build it.
Thanks to both of you for the tips! Always learning!
Dave
