At present, I have a 5 and 8 weight rod. Are these appropriate weights for bass, or do I need to look at either 6- or 7- weights? What do you guys use?

Doesn't really matter - the 8wt is probably better. Not so much for fighting the fish as for setting the hook.

I use a fast action 7wt scierra ic3 rod and 7wt floating and full sink lines. I like my 5 wt for small poppers, but it lacks backbone for the hookset and makes for a challenge when I need to drag a fish out of the weeds or a wood pile.

What about using a strip set like you do with Bonefish? I've seen comparisons and it looks like you get more PSI on the strip set than a normal pull-up set with the rod.

I think I do a combination of both, subconsciously.

Definatly the strip set... keeps the fly in the area of the fish..... if you miss , you still have chance.
The problem with peacock bass is not setting the hook.... it's hanging on to your rod.....
Just keep stripping, the fish will set the hook.
