In late July we headed to the Missoula area for Mancation IV but had to mix it in with some Famcation. We rented a house on the bitterroot and enjoyed 7 nights of peace, quiet, and beauty. Since our families were with us we were limited to just three full days of fishing, except off our back porch, and spent only one day on the main stem of the Bitterroot. It was a hot calm day and we tied into some nice trout in the 4-17" range and plenty of whitefish. The flies of choice were streamers, wet flies, caddis, and hoppers. During the next two days we hiked around the East Fork of the Bitterroot about 20 miles south of Darby. It was great small water with plenty of trout and few whitefish. We caught plenty to keep us occupied and I even was able to land a couple of fat 15" babies We will definitely go back to the East Fork in the future. The water was great and the fish were fresh as could be for late July. However, a return trip will have to wait for a few years since we will be heading further east for some new waters.
