About 5 days ago I noticed an increase in gull and eagle activity in case inlet. Large flocks of gulls pounding the water near treasure/stretch island. I thought it was the standard chum fry which happens this time of year. I walked the beach in front of my house on Friday and found it to be littered with dead herring. I would guess about 50-75 per 100 feet of beach. Most of the fish have been gutted by the gulls with the body remaining. As of Sunday the smell is starting to intensify with a half dozen eagles chowing down with the crows and gulls. Rumor has it that a tribal netting operation went wrong with the net breaking and releasing all the dead herring back into the bay. If you have any info on this please reply. Thanks David
I don't know anything about this specific incident. But PS herring are in a fair amount of disease trouble and have been prone to localized "kills" for awhile now. That would be my guess.
