I bought a mint one about 6 years ago for $350 which then I himmed and hawwed about since I rarely ever fish below a 4wt for most of my fishing. I hardly ever use it since I feel guilty about possibly scratching it but given the worth and pleasure I have when using it, I will never sell it.
Not to shit on this thread, but I don't understand this LL phenomenon. There are many long 3wt rods out there that are all a blast to fish with. Even a comparable used Winston WT or Scott G will go for half of what the 389 LL does.
But it all boils down to they're not LL's. Guys who fell in love with LL's 20 years ago are even more in love with them today. It's a collector/ nostalgia thing, just as much as it's an amazing rod. I own several LL's and am willing to pay the money for them because they take me back about 25 years and those memories and I love the action of the rods. On the 389 specifically...crazy following. I had a new unfished with spare tip 389 I just sold a month or so ago on the auction site. Sold within an hour for just shy of a grand to a guy in Italy. They were and still are great rods.
I've always been a big fan of the LL series. And unlike the Scott G series, the LL's are as nice cosmetically as they are to fish. I've owned several and think the 490LL and 279LL are even better than the 389LL. As most guys (and rod manufacturers) seem to like faster rods, I am frankly surprised that So many guys are as fond of the LL series as I am.
Those old Sages do look very nice with the Struble seat and dark maroon-brown blank. I am partial to the crusty, old timey looks of the old Scott rods though. Kind of a raw look to them.
I've always wondered how the SPL and the LL compare.
I did get a Sage 389 LL -2. For 395 on eBay in excellent condition. It fishes like a dream. At 73 I wish I had had this when I started but feel very lucky my buddy pushed me to get it. After I fished his I was sold. I am sure that there are many great rods. I got a Sage 590 Z axis ,but is very heavy and for me it is a big river streamer ,nymph rod. The 389 , well my buddy does it all with his. The hard part is trying one out before putting your credit card on line.. These forums help but keep asking around. Nothing like fishing one.
