NFR: What is this?

    A fly of some kind? Never seen legs quite like that. Maybe ~18-20 mm long.

    My guess would be a Dipteran, yes. But what do I know?

    I believe it to be a Robber Fly of genus Polacantha or similar.

    Are those similar to bott flies?

    Do you mean Bot Fly? If so, not really, other than that both are True Flies (Dipterans). ;)
