Not getting the coating I want with SHHN

#1
What am I doing wrong?

Maybe I bought the wrong stuff...? I bought: Advanced Hard As Nails, Strengthening Top Coat.

First, did I get the right stuff?

Second, do I need to apply more than one coat?

Third, I don't have a rotary style vise. (I bet most of you are laughing at me right now  )

Anyway, I know I'm asking a lot of questions about this (as of late), but you guys have been a huge help.

Thanks

What are you trying to do with Sally? If you're looking for high-gloss heads on salmon flies, one coat won't cut it; you'd need multiple applications. When I use it on regular old trout flies, I thin it 50/50 and just hit the head once; that's all it ever takes to lock the thread down.

I haven't used sally's for a few years and just use the cheapest clear nail polish I can find, like the dollar store... Of course
I'm using it on display files so end results are critical but have had just as good as luck as with Sally's... My first coat is
usually black nail polish, just to make sure everything is black, and then two sometimes three coats of clear, let it dry between coats.... Also remember the shape of the head you're putting the clear on is what you'll end up with, so make sure it looks like you want it to before clearing it. Not having a rotary vise I would take your fly out of the vise and turn it by hand, for control, I'd go crazy without a rotary, good for a lot of things.... Hope this helps....

I use Loon Hard Head clear for what you are doing and have had good luck with it, but Sally's should work fine, maybe just a
second coat is needed...

Kaiserman I love it, and use it all the time for Chromies and small chironomids. I generally only use one coat as I don't want it to look too bulky.

Is the one I mentioned the right one Mike?
Not sure how much it matters, but I think that is a different type. Like Jack just posted, Sally Hansen's is a brand with multiple types of polish. Hard as Nails comes in a clear bottle. My bottle is different than Jack's, but same stuff. I think it works better than the other brands I have tried.
