I've seen so many pictures in the gallery of pass lake with nice big fish in them. I wanted to take a trip over there but my time is very short, I am still in high school so I have to structure a trip around school, homework, artwork, a relatively demanding girlfriend, a job at McDonalds, working for my grandma (all Sunday, every Sunday), and time at the tying bench. If I go up there I want to catch fish, so I was wondering if anyone could help me out on what catches hogs this time of year.

This is easy. Don't do your homework 'til the morning it's due, ditch the girlfriend, and tie your flies/do artwork in the middle of the night when you should be sleeping. It's all a matter of priorities...and remember...its worth it if you're fishing.
Just like the Brad Paisley Song - I'm gunna miss her.
Well I love her
But I love to fish
I spend all day out on this lake
And hell is all I catch
Today she met me at the door
Said I would have to choose
If I hit that fishin' hole today
She'd be packin' all her things
And she'd be gone by noon
Well I'm gonna miss her
When I get home
But right now I'm on this lakeshore
And I'm sittin' in the sun
I'm sure it'll hit me
When I walk through that door tonight
That I'm gonna miss her
Oh, lookie there, I've got a bite
Now there's a chance that if I hurry
I could beg her to stay
But that water's right
And the weather's perfect
No tellin' what I might catch today
Maybe that explains why I am a slack-off, lonely insomniac...
I'm Gonna have to agree with Mr. Trout on this one. Tie up some nice buggers and midges, take a sick day, ditch the girl (if she's that demanding then she's not worth it) grab your bud and go hit Pass Lake for the day. Paint the trout as your artwork and you're good as gold.
Thank you all, i'm going to have to do that. it's been too long since I've had a solid day's fishing. By the by, my girlfriend is demanding in a good way, a way that benefits me, it's just time consuming.
Mr. Trout is correct. If you are considering college, he has just laid out a recipe for success! Add cocktails, fishing hung-over, limited food supply and you should be just fine.
What the hell is the point of a demanding girlfriend in high school? I am nobody to talk as I had one in HS, cut her lose and be free!
Oh, you mean like Viagra demanding, for those of us who fished Pass in the 60's :thumb:
Get on the lake, take your normal lake flies, and figure it out. Big browns like big meals, and often close to shore. Great March chiron fishing, and BIG size. Otherwise follow the season on bugs. Good evening rise later on in the year.
Lots of past discussion here, seek grasshopper..... :ray1:
Haven't fished Pass in a couple of years but remember slaying fish on mids this time of year. It was a no-brainer. We would either "chan" them or use a strike indicator. If we used a strike indicator I would clip my hemos to the fly and drop it to the bottom to get the depth before setting my indicator. Then set my indicator so that my fly was only 2-3ft from the bottom. If I didnt get any action after a bit I would then progressively cut a couple of feet off of my leader until I found what part of the water column the fish were hanging. It was really the easiest fishing I've done.
My bro and I got tired of mids and started chasing the big brown pigs that Pass holds. By far the most effective method for enticing these pigs is casting a big white bugger to shore and stripping it in *as fast as possible*. I emphasize the speed here. We always fished the lake from a drift boat and have had the opportunity to see these huge browns charge our fly (of all colors and types) only to turn back because we weren't stripping fast enough. They came out to investigate and turned around (I personally do think slow is a natural presentation, most pray is going to move with speed). When we pulled the fly with pace the fish were much more eager to take our flies. You'll have to change your tactics during low light conditions.
Good Luck. And do with your girlfriend what you do with your fish; Love'em and Leave'em.
When you get older as my age you don't even let the thought of any women ruining your day on the water. I've had my fun with the opposite sex and now all I want to do is fish.
which makes me kinda wonder about "Bare Brothers," as well as "Hogwrangler" and "AbsoluteHog," the latter complaining about spending too much time with his girlfriend.
Jimbo, the "Well, I gotta go now...someone just pulled into my driveway."
Young AbsolutHog, Heed the good advise given here. Lose the demanding girl friend at this point in your life. You'll end up like a guy that posted here a while back that he was going on his Honeymoon and looking for some fishing pointers on the area he was going because he had "PERMISSION" to take his Fly Rod....not a good sign. Spend that girl friend time fishing while you can.:beathead:
You sound like a smart kid with a respectible work ethic and family values.
You sound like you have your priorities in the right place to me. Just remember to always be planning ahead and set some goals.
For fishing - you usually have plenty of light left after school to hit the local rivers and lakes and beaches. You have winter, spring, and summer breaks (and probably several others). Try and work the odd shifts that others don't like - very early, late, etc. This should give you a better window for fishing (you can hit the morning bite or the evening bite). If your current job isn't working out schedule wise to give you some fishing time - drop it and find another. Don't get stuck for too long in the fast food track. Think outside the bun (er box that is).
Also, plan some 3-4day weekend road trips with your buds for camping, hiking, etc to places you don't normally get to fish. That way you are sure (more likely) to get the days off from work.

And for your original question... Sorry, never caught a hog out of Pass, but I have taken a few 17-19" browns and bows on muddlers, Mickey Finns (cast into the shallows at night) and orange and black bunny strip sculpins (some of you will be seeing this ugly little thing in a week or so). I fish these on a Type III sinking line with either my 4 or 6 depending on what I feel like fishing with and if I actually want to be able to cast some of those big flies...
Hog, i'm gonnna hafta go with the other guys here. DITCH THE GIRL. there is no such thing as demanding in a good way, only in bad ways that retract from fishing.
Instead of dumping her, how about introducing her to flyfishing? If she likes it, you'll not only still have a girlfriend but a regular fishing buddy! Just don't get upset when she starts out-fishing you!
And to all you guys who told him to dump her, get real!! If you had a girlfriend who was demanding, but in a 'beneficial way', like you'd dump her??!!! If so, maybe Old Man will let you borrow some of his blue pills...that is, if she didn't dump you first.
If you find a girl who will fish with you, I think wedding bells are called for LOL
