Rattles in flies

About 25 years ago I started putting rattles in my striper and blue fish flies. I did the same for pike bass flies too.
I always caught larger fish than my friend who was a much better tier and fly fisherman. 4 to 6 times a year I would hook up to big fish on the beach and could not stop their runs. I would break them off so I would not lose my fly line.

Maybe a clue as to why this happened

"No one knows where those spots are," he said. "I'll never tell anyone where those spots are." Hmmm, wonder why he is so secretive about where he fishes. Probably won't even post his spots on WFF.
