I road tripped down to the Parker, AZ area. On the way down thru California I stopped at numerous gold camps in the Western Sierra's. I stayed the first night in "Angel camp" where Mark Twain lived, and wrote the classic novel "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" what a sight to see. The next morning we stopped at Yosemite Park. I didn't do any fishing because I was with the fam, and I'm the only fish head of the bunch. But of course drooled at all the water along the way. After spending a few hours in the park we made the last leg of the trip to Parker, AZ. In Arizona I did do some bass fishing for 4 days, man I had a blast. I was the only "weirdo" fishing for bass with a fly rod. But, I slammed them! Into my third day I was teaching a few locals how to cast a fly rod. I think I may have sparked some fly fever in that part of the world. It was a blast! I know I did a report on the Parker Strip fishing last year, so I won't get too detailed. But really I can't express how great the fishing and Vacationing in that area really is. It should be a must for all fly guys. No one fishes there on the fly, and trust the Bass fishing is soo amazing. The whole time I was wet wading the Colorado river.90 degree days with cool mornings and nights. At one point I found a hole that I thought may hold some fish. There was lots of obstruction. I threw in a wool headed olive streamer. At first I was stripping this streamer, but this paticular hole had no room to strip, so I just let it slow sink. Out of no where WHAM came out a large mouth...slam hook set...nope. Damm! Threw it out again...instantly out came that fierce threat again... hook set... nope pulled up to early due to my nerves. So third time, I took a second and thought damm I need to do a real bass style hook set and just rip the crap out of this fish (feeling like a real bass guy now). Third cast, slow sink... again a fierce attack... SLAM.. The biggest hook set ever. I was seen jumping up, left the ground, high sticked, but damm I stuck that bad boy! Away he thrashed like no other fish. A viscious fish and boy he was pissed. I tryed to manage my line quick, reel up, got him on the reel, started to pull this fat large mouth up the bank as he was thrashing wildly... and pop my 3x snapped like nothing. Damm heart break. I've pulled steel on lighter line. Now I see why I should have used an 8 wieght with at least a 2x. Ohh well. Every year I go to that Parker strip. I'm now feeling like I got it dialed, so next year it's on. After spending 5 days in Parker, we headed back home. This time we took highway 395 up through the Eastern Seirras. I didn't fish, but saw so much great water through out the whole area. I saw "Hot creek" on my home, soo gorgeous! We stopped at Reno, NV to crash and take advantage of the casino's luxury buffet. The next morning we headed up through Klamath Falls, saw the "Spring Creek" at Collier Memorial State Park, cool! Cut over to the I5 just above Crater Lake, to end our road trip. Now that I'm home I'm still dreaming of how sweet that bassin was! Good times for sure!
