i'm new to fishing for steelhead. What half dozen or so flies should i start out with???
get your self some
1) wolly buggers in various sizes and colors
2) effective pink worm variation
3) clouser styled flys
4) somthing big and bright, like an orange alaskan king pattern for muddy water
5)marabou patterns in purple, black, and blaze red
6) bombers and muddlers for skating.
and for summer runs:
1) pink worm variation
2) small nymph like the AP black
5)small buggy drys
and the BEST ALL AROUND FLY:
size 2-6 black egg sucking-rubber leg stonefly
For this time of year I would say anything with purples, pinks, blues and the right depth of the water column to get them there...Enjoy the drug!!!!!!
Thanks for the info...I'm new to the forum and appreciate the help
My favorite steelhead fly is purple and about the size of my fist.
Ask Santa for a fly tying kit and begin to create your own top ten. Short of that, I'd recommend the black egg sucking bugger, steelhead muddler, skunk, polar shrimp, street walker, assorted marabou patterns, rubber leg stonefly, and a couple of dry skater patterns. All of these in a variety of sizes with some heavily weighted. (#8-#2) Good luck!
I actually am a bit of a rookie fly tier...are there any books or other resources that give directions on materials/ tying these flies that anyone knows of ??? Thanks
Get a bunch of rabbit strips and lash em to a hook.
dont forget your glowstick!
