Finally a place to share my misunderstood obsession that only a select few around me seem to understand.
Hi, my name is Cody and I am also a Steelheader.

Hi my name is Jeff. I've been swinging flies for three years, I caught my first steelhead yesterday. Is there any hope, or will I always have this craving?

Great post and congrats. Your first was much prettier than mine.

To say that spey master is a pimp ..... well the first one is free..I have found myself standing in crystal clear water in January just out side of Marble Mount by about 16mi and nothing to hear but the snow hitting the water. At that moment I realized that I was meant to be a fly fisherman. The water was Gin clear and the only thing I could hear is the snow hitting water with such force. There is no better moment in life then to hear the snow hitting the water and hook up with a sweet metal head.. iced over guides.. cold finger tips.. and shear addiction.. SIGN ME UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi my name is John, and it has been nearly four years since I last fished for PNW steel. Raised in Gig Harbor my father is responsible for my addiction to steelhead. It started with a gear trip on the Hoh river when I was 14, it ended on the Cowlitz when I was 18 with an 80 dollar Sports Authority special, two weeks before I left home for the Army. Since then I have found south eastern tailwaters to calm my nerves for trout, and Great Lakes runs to keep my appetite salivated for my home of western Washington. The last time I set foot in my home of Washington was back in 2008 on R&R leave from the slums of Iraq to float the Yakima and the Klick. Now with a multitude of injuries I can no longer stay in the military and will be returning to my home of western Washington and with 8 years of fishing in my home to make-up, I do plan to spend the "year off" I set aside for myself shooting my veins full of anadromous fish and reminding myself why my home is my best secret I kept.

Welcome home, thank you for your service and your sacrifice.

It may surprise you but addiction is a progressive disease that increases in power over time even if a person isn't "using". Your relapse may overwhelm you and your family. Another part, you never get the same rush as you did the first time you "used" but you will chase that rush relentlessly.

    Many tight lines to you.

P3080282.jpg I must report that the insanity that is this disease continues.

I had another slip, and found myself out on the Hoh recently where I stuck a steelhead on the third or fourth cast. I saw the fish roll and take. It seemed to be a decent fish, and its conduct at the end of my line supported that opinion when it broke me off as I tried to put the breaks on after it put me into the backing while making for some very fast water at Mach IV. Such was my awe, that the explicative I uttered was delivered in a whisper rather than a scream. I worked my way downriver over the course of the next few hours, and finally pined another fish. This one I managed to bring to hand and get a pic and a short video. As I released it I had the realization that my trout fishing was headed for the toilet.

I thought about my tying bench, and the fact that I don't know - or care - where my size-4 through size-18 hooks are, nor do I care that Steven Tyler's use of hackle in his hair has made the stuff harder to find than sub-four-dollar-a-gallon-gas, and that my nightstand currently supports copies of The Color of Winter, The Complete Steelheader, A Steelheader's Way , and A Passion for Steelhead. I am screwed.
