So was asked if there is any open water worth trying..not necessarily catching, stillwater wise in whatcom or skagit counties...i.e. Pass, squalicum etc?

I don't know...I'm off on my steelhead tangent for the next few months..but would have thought that Pass might be fishable for someone who is just looking to get out and get their fix????

Many thanks!!!

Pass is game-on anytime it's not frozen over. As with anywhere, cold water = slow action but it's kind of relative there. You can still get fish if you know the place. The other good news is Pass tends to be one of the last to freeze over, and one of the first to thaw, because of its location.

Right now? Haven't been by this week. Possibly Islander, uncledave or another local can weigh in w/ its current condition...

Hasn't been any activity on either Pass or Lone that I have heard of. I would think the fishing would be very slow, although they aren't frozen over yet, it has been pretty cold. It is suppose to warm up in the next few days, a balmy 38 deg by Wed. Only trouble is it comes with rain and snow.

Well, its not over at the coast, but I had the same question in the late 80's about the Columbia Basin. The whole basin was frozen over and I called the fisheries biologist in Ephrata.

I want some open water that I can float tube....I was younger then, I tend to freeze now.

So he sent me to a spring fed lake. Cast the fly..catch a fish. Cast the fly...catch a fish. Change the fly....cast the fly...catch a fish. Change the fly....cast the fly....catch a fish.

This went on for most of the day. It got boring catching fish. To change the game. If the fly caught a fish within two or three casts it stayed in the fly box.

Three or four flies did not CATCH ANY FISH!!! Out of the box they went. Never looked back.

This time of year...it is all or nothing. Lots of nothing. But when it is ALL...well I never thought I would get bored with hooking fish!!

As of 3:00 pm today, Pass and Cranberry are iced from shore to shore. Sources say that Lone is the same. Oh, the humanity!

Yeah, I've been exiled to the salt and dreaming of steelhead for the time being. I'm out of my element in the salt and I never can catch much. I want Teal back! As far as I know it's still under ice. bawling:

I heard it was fully iced last week from a friend today. A few more days of warmth...
Why not go over there and scout it out for us all?
