For a minute there I thought you were serious.
He is... If you think about it, a common gear fishing summer steel tactic is to drift a small red bead near it. Yet another is to use a "rag", nothing more than a hank of egg yarn tied to the line. In reality, these fish aren't the most intelligent and the simplist of flies/lures will work if just put in front of there faces.
As James said, I am serious. Some of the flies I've used that have been attacked by a summer fish have been pretty well used, abused, and put away wet a few times.:thumb:
I'm a dry fly guy. Anyone caught summer steel on a dry?
The Hoh is open for salmon and maybe summer runs depending on how you read the regs. The Sol Duc the same. The Kalama and the Cowlitz, open.
This is generaly considered a slow time where I am but I've hooked well...lets just say a lot of fish this week. What I am saying I guess is there are plenty of fish in the river already. And like all early season fish they will eat just about anything they can catch.
almost any fly will work really. the main thing is water temperature. early in the year with the water colder the fish wont move as far to a fly as they will later. I am planning on using a type 4 tip during june and an assortment of G.P.s, large hairwings, and marabous. After the 4th of july though you wont catch me fishing anything but a dry line. They'll crush dries.
#1 secret to catching steelhead = finding steelhead. if they're around, they're aggressive
You should see what will considers a dry... With enough Gink, even a globug floats (for a while!)....
I have been thinking of using some of my retriever/chow's hair in some shrimp but havent got around to it.
SSSHHHHHHH…..actually summer steelhead don’t exist…..it is all a conspiracy………Not worth your time……nope……lets just let this thread die……..yep………:thumb:
A friend of a friend who works at the sol duc hatchery said that 12 summer runs swam in 2 days ago.
now james, you know I view fishing glo bugs as morally deplorable and unsporting. I much prefer a sand shrimp tied on a riffle hitch, really slays!
Some of those prawn patterns you had looked real enough to almost count
I vote that it should be illegal to use the word steelhead for 7 days. :beathead: Almost there I feel like a 10 year old waiting for christmas morning.
I wish it were true!
Hah! It's cause you fish the Kalama! If there were ever a river with dour steelhead in it, this is it!
