Please accept my most sincere thank you for your service and my gratitude for your sacrifices.

My grandfather James A. O'Brien kept a diary of his time in the American Expeditionary Force during the Great War. It is all very matter of fact, but reading between the lines is sometimes chilling.
I've learned to puzzle out the handwriting, so this is the page I attached. I have copied verbatim including mistakes.

This was the basis for Veterans Day on Nov 11

"Nov. 11 the 11 on the month at 11 oclock the war was over and we were all glad. The huns came over to our lines shouting Kamerade the war is finish they gave us cigarettes and souvenirs we stayed on the lines for two days, We had to bury our dead on the hill where we stopped hostilities"
