I think I'm tapping out on what I thought was gonna be a rad convo.... Korn and Tool in the same sentence? You gotta be fuckin kidding me chromers?? Music is awesome because it speaks to everyone differently... Just today I've had a jam band session, some southern pickers, got weird with some ween and then got in touch with my inner lesbian with some sylvan esso. The other Crusties on the job site can't figure me out because I haven't played Skynard or CCR at all.
Tool and Korn is borderline offensive and truly says to me you haven't spent any time hearing Maynard and Carey make it rain. There is no stage antics. Maynard typically faces away from the crowd and snakes around with a mic in his hand. A tool show is about playing the music as good as they possibly can and conveying the power and depth of their sound. The most powerful thing about their show at the gorge was as 60,000 people walked back to the campgrounds it was eerily silent. Everyone was so hung up on the show and trying to put their mind back together not even a frat boy made a sound.
That's cool if it doesn't fit your vibe but for the love of god don't bring Korn and their hot topic, studded belt, purple hair and piercings confused 13 year old sound into the arena with tool. Please....
Panic, phish and the like conjur images of Montana boys high on DMT living in vans their parents bought and not showering because they are too dumb to turn the knob. It may be good music but the crust of a thousand faux hippies squashes it for me. Back to tool please.
They never made a bad album, but 10,000 days missed pretty hard with both their radio hits IMO. Lateralus is my favorite for sure. That album still makes the hair on the back of neck levitate but Undertow has the raw energy of a young band finding their stride, more polished than Opiate while still feeling pissed off and ready for a musical skull fucking. Aenima is a masterpiece to me and would be hard to place, tying with undertow for number 2
Never heard of Tool, the band until I encountered this thread. OK, so not my age group, but my kids were in high school and college in the 90s. Yet I never heard of them.
Best band is like determining best fly rod, a lot subjectivity involved but there is a lot of music around that if someone told me it was there favorite I'd immediately question their judgment and I can't say the same for fly rods.
Korn and Tool... I don't see the comparison but I can see how Tool might not be someones cup of tea.
There's a shitload of music from the 90's that I love (probably because I had mushy teenage brain) so I won't bore you with a comprehensive list but here's some more bands who had albums out in the 90's that I still listen to...
Radiohead, Slint,Jeff Buckley,Beck, a whole lot british shoegaze bands, 90's hip hop, The Jayhawks, blah blah blah
I still find a lot of new music that I really enjoy but I don't know if it will stick with me like the 90's stuff, you know... mushy brain and all.
Beck.. first time I ever heard Where it's at was coming back down from an incredible trip up in Ontario's North Channel for fall Chinook.. Big BRUISERS and oh so hot chrome. Got a coupla couches, sleep on the love seat. Still like the tune.. and that's coming from an incorrigible metal head.
Danny Carey.... the guy is a fucking animal. It's one thing to rub on your iPhone and listen to him on YouTube it's another experience to see music as it should be. Live, loud, and with lots of titties.
