NFR Woeful Mariners

He wont come here if we tell him it's pitching or hitting. He could be a 20game winning pitcher 35 + Home run hitter with a bunch of rbi's. Sounds like he's to good to keep out of the lineup. A Japanese Roy Hobbs

He has made it clear he wants to stay as a two way player and Jerry Dipoto has stated they would play Nelson in the field now and then to allow him to DH.

Been an interesting day for the M's.

Yes, if a choice, better to be a good everyday player. I saw Olerud pitch at WSU, and he was fantastic, but went directly to the majors straight from WSU to the Blue Jays World Series run as hitter.

Love the possibility of a two way player

You can't put a pitcher in the field. He can't throw a hundred pitches on Tuesday then have to spin around and uncork one from the wall to home on Wednesday or Thursday. At best, week throw. At worst, DL.

Other than Ichiro, who was a little slap hitter, have there been other Japanese hitters in baseball? Nori Aioki. M's had a pretty good catcher, can't think of his name. Hitting doesn't necessarily translate.

Plenty of good Japanese pitchers, though. If this guy is in the Tanaka, Yu Darvish in his prime class, all the effort to get him would be worth it. If that means getting him a few plate appearances every week, that'd be OK.

Hadeki Matsui was a beast for the Yankees

Guys with minimal arms, even injured, can play first base. Weak armed guys play left field as well. I think it is possible to pitch and play the field at both positions with minimum stress on arms on non-pitching days.

I do think they will make him choose one or the other, and if he loves to hit, it is a national league team he must prefer I'd think. Unless he does the very weird thing and pitches in the American League and hits on the days he pitches? Crazy.

Shall be interesting to see!

Ohtani just announced he was signing with the Angles. That's got to be a nut shot for Jerry. Crap - now our farm system is depleted and or starting rotation is scary. Should be interesting at the winter meetings this weekend. I guess we have 3.55Mil to sign a bunch of international kids....

Yeah, the hype of Ohtani deal was incredible high. I hope as a player he lives up to it, but I sure do hope that the Angels stink this upcoming season. I don't blame Dipoto for trying though.

Hmmm, small market team huh. Yeah, I’ve always thought of LA as having that small city flavor. Even when I lived there back in the early seventies and it took over 2 hours to drive from Long Beach to Thousand Oaks at freeway speeds it had that small town feel.

I've been reading about this guy. His pitching sucks and so does his hitting.

On another note, who was that Pitcher that Seattle signed last year but didn't pitch a game because he had surgery on his throwing arm. The name started with a "S" I think. He doesn't seem to be on this years roster
