Just trying some ideas for sculpins. Just had to share what kind of twisted ideas I get. I don't like wool head sculpins and really don't like using the deer hair. So I'm trying out other ways to get the big fat head of a sculpin...

Nice work. I know a lake where the smallies would be all over that.

Nice work. What is the head made of? Looks like a good pattern for Texas saltwater.

I used a small straw (compliments of a local barista) cut down to size and tied it accross the front of the hook with figure 8 wraps as you would barbell eyes. This gives you a nice wide frame to work with. The hook shank is wrapped pretty heavily with lead. I then used some of my thickest yarn to build up the head. I tied in the tail feathers, flash, and 'fins'. Then overwapped from the tail up to behind the 'eyes' with black chenille.

For the eyes, I don't have any store bought eyes to glue on, so i fed some yarn through the straw, cut it flush, then dabbed a drop of white polish. Once dry, a black marker dotted the eyes, followed by a drop of clear 'hard as nails'.

I had visions of using something like this for crawling\swimming along the bottom of big deep pools looking for dollies\bulls. But I can see how the general idea could be adapted for other pursuits.

I think any angry predator would slam that fly. Give an update after some R&D.
