    Bugger for Browns

The colors of this W'bugger have proved very effective in getting the attention of brown trout. It works so well for browns, that I rarely get a rainbow on it--just browns. Crazy, but the fly seems rather exclusive in this way.

    Martha Brown Woolly Bugger recipe

#10 or #8 TMC 300 hook (or equivalent 6XL streamer hook)
    6/0 Olive thread
    Medium Copper wire
Light Olive Green (“Insect Green”) marabou
    Barred Olive Schlappen hackle
New Age Chennille, Size2, Wintergreen #62 (Manufacturer: Riverborn)
    Kaufmann’s Streamborn carries the chenille.

The materials are listed in the order they’re first tied onto the hook. I chose this hook, because I don’t like under-sized trout getting impaled on big hooks. To get the body size, I went with a long-shank 6XL hook. Hooking ability isn’t an issue, as brown trout have tended to strike this fly from the side, resulting in a hook up at the boney corner of the mouth. Can’t beat that.
