    Without style and grace

Another steehead landed with out style and grace with a jig under an indicator, 11/29. It looks like this fish is lower caudal clipped, but I'm unaware of any research activities using this clip here.

    Paul,
Would you feel better about your style and grace if it was a fly with lead dumbbell eyes or the fish was caught on the swing, LOL?

I've been fishing this low gradient stretch of river. There are just a few runs that swing well. The runs along canyon walls and those with rocky banks hint at enough bottom structure that could hold a fly grabbing steelhead. But where the jigs work so well is the runs that are a jet of swift current shooting into a lake like pool with a bottom of small gravel and mud. The bottom drops right away below the fast water. On each side of the current jet is slack water or even back eddies. If I try to swing these, I need a heavy tip if there is any hope on getting the fly down. They it swings a couple feet through the seam, and drops to the bottom, snagging up. I could swing and step down, getting a couple feet swing through fish holding water on each cast. Or I could put on an indicator and jig, and in one cast cover 80 ft. of the holding water straight down the current. Now that the temperature has dropped off, fish pick up the jig in surprisingly slow water where the surface riffles from the jet have just dissipated, especially if I tighten down on the line so the jig swings up a little at this point.

Paul, that is a fine description and some good information.
