No it's not, it is my least favorite time of the year to throw streamers, I don't know where this rumor started that fall was a good time but I think it is the worst time to actually get fish to EAT a streamer. It's pretty pathetic that people think that browns get more "aggressive" in the fall before the spawn. In my experience it is the least aggresive time of year for them feeding. Besides most of the fish move out of the river systems into smaller tribs to spawn, leaving the river with a much reduced population of browns. You can get a small window in early fall when the water temps drop and the weather is shitty to get into some decent streamer action before they get into spawn mode, but that is more rare than the fabled salmon fly hatch and actually hitting it to where you catch the shit out of fish. Now the fall is the best time to get really aggressive Rainbows on streamers.
I sure wish My clients would listen to me and book trips in the spring and high water instead of now. I am slammed and the streamer fishing is about to get real shitty, But apparently it is so engrained in their heads they won't budge. Ask anyone who is a hardcore streamer fisherman (brown trout) and I'll bet you everyone of them says that the fall is not near as good as the spring/highwater. FTF and FKG.
I agree with Rick. It's been my experience to get more aggressive chases in the fall, but the majority are just drive-bys with the fish having absolutely no intentions on eating. Spring and early summer (coming off of runoff) have become my favorite time of to target browns. Don't get me wrong, I have had good days in the fall during prespawn, but overall I have had better hookup rates per chase earlier in the season. I would say that the fish that do eat in the fall are usually better looking (more filled out and better coloration).
i liked floating 15 miles in a couple hours:) and throwing 10' 9wt's w/ 300 grain tips and a wet diaper on the end! Rick, you are a special breed, and i do concur!! wish i stuck that pig instead of drooling on myself:)
