This is what mine was supposed to look like. If I had a better way to make sure I cut the pipe straight it would be this nice.

you could set up a jig pretty easy. take a 2x4 and bore a hole in the middle to the OD of the pipe then take a sawsall and cut perpendicualr to the 2x4 about 1/2 way and going through the center of the hole. Then stick it in a vice and feed the pipe in from the bottom and control the sawsall with the other hand.
If you dont own a sawsall or are inexperienced in operating one (with one hand especially) you could do the same with a hack-saw, it would just take longer.
I had it in a vise and used a jig saw. What I will do once I get the room is get a table saw and put the fence at half the pipe diameter. And to protect the rod better it will be felt lined.
