    Chad - Try clamping the hook at the different spot in the vise jaws. You're probably having to over-tighten to get it to hold and weakening the hook in the process. Sometimes you have to try a few different hook positions to find the sweet spot in the jaws for a particular hook.

    I'm sure that has something to do with it. This is Jim's old regal style vise. It only has one setting since it is a spring loaded model. It also has a groove that fits the larger hooks. I've noticed with this size (4-6), they are just too small to fit in the groove right. Sometimes, while tying, I hear a pop and the hook has slipped into the groove. If this happens, the hook almost always breaks. I have to remember on those hooks to move them foward, away from that groove, as I would my small trout hooks. But then I've had them too close to the tip before, only to have them shoot out like a bullet and nearly put a hole in the wall on the other side of the room...
