He was busting the surface amongst some big skipjacks out in deep water, and the captain said "big fish"! I cast to him, a few strips, he pounced all over it, and game on. Mingo, I was using a Rio Deep Sea 26 ft. line, 450 grain. Earlier my running line broke on my shooting head setup (with LC-13), and I did a on-the-boat replacement with the Deep Sea. I liked the line a lot; it and the TFO TiCr 10 wt. were a great combo.
A very tough fish. He dogged me for a while, but I was able to get him moving by quickly changing direction of pressure on him.
By the way, he tasted good cooked with butter and garlic. :-)
This La Paz trip is great for the variety of species (thanks, Philster, for sending me that direction). Last year my dad and I caught over 20 different species, this year 18, from wee little guys to big guys. If you come back reincarnated, pray that it isn't as a sardina. Everything eats a sardina . . .
