Sweet, I fished there a couple of weeks ago on vacation, grew up down there. Too bad we waited to fish the week after Christmas, rained harder than I can remember. Putah was pretty much blown except for about a half mile by the dam. My dad caught one I and missed a few strikes stripping a black bugger. Theres some nice fish in there! We saw a couple of old Chinooks too, it's cool to hear that they are making somewhat of a return.
Great fish!--my son lives in SF and fishes Putah almost weekly--the pics he sends are fantastic,we fish the McCloud with him every year-but not Putah yet.I just sent him some new tyes for Putah all less than # 20's!I think the NoCal fish are genetically predisposed to these MicroMayflys 20 and smaller.
Your right on about the flies, micro mayflies are a wonder around these areas of Ca. expecially during winter when the tiny baetis still continue to hatch. Another good one is a Zebra Midge size 20-24,or a size 14-18 brownish orange caddis poopah, I have these guys every year at the creek clinging to my waders like a launch pad.
