This is a simple yet highly effective pattern. Most anglers have one or more of these in their fly boxes.
I started with a Mustad 9672. Tan thread. Flouresent Green Midge Liquid Lace injected with Baby oil.
Tie in Liquid Lace approx. 1/16th" behind hook eye.with 4 overlapping wraps to trap the oil. Wrap Lace sparsely on top of the hook towards the bend. When you get to the bend of the hook take 4 overlapping wraps of the thread to lock in the pressure of the oil. Take a Pantone pen (Brown#154) and color the front 1/3 of the thread/Lace underbody. While streching the lace as tight as you can start wrapping it towards the hook eye but, after the 2nd wrap release all tension and simple allow the lace to wind on the hook. This will create a beautiful segmented body and the baby oil will allow the body to glow under low light conditions.You will also notice that the Liquid lace is increasing it's size in diameter as you wrap up the hook shank. This is also caused by the trapped oil expanding the tubing.
Approx. 1/16th" behind the hook eye finish with 4 good wraps to lock the pressure and oil in the Liquid Lace. Now take 2 Natural Pheasant rump feathers and strip them of all their fuzz at the bases.Take your fingernails and flatten the quill of the feathers and tie them in behind the eye.Wrap as you would any hackle except preen the fibrets rearward as you wrap and take your time to get it right. After you tie off the head and whip finish take your moistened fingers and preen the hackle up and downward and rearward to expose the body. When this fly gets wet the hackle will fold down into the body yet when you relax it in the water it has a tendancy to "breath". This pattern has acounted for many caught fish since it's inception.And this new product will surely increase that catch rate because I feel that it is much more vivid than the Chenniles that were originally used to tye with.
