This is a Yak-hair candlefish that I tied, a good fly for both coho and cutthroat. The Yak hair is an excellent polar bear substitute, very glossy and transluscent, and more durable than most synthetics. With the epoxy head, this fly is nearly indestructable.

From the beach, fish it on an intermediate line. Start with a medium fast, fairly even retrieve, but don't be afraid to mix it up; this fly also fishes well with a very slow retrieve. From a boat, fish on a heavy shooting head, in tide rips and around kelp and other structure, or over fish marked on a depth finder. The natural, imitative colors of this fly fish best in clear water conditions.

    Hook: Mustad 3407, sizes #2-#6
    Thread: Medium Unithread mono
Underwing: white or natural yak hair
midwing #1: pearl and/or chartreuse krystal flash
    midwing #2: chartreuse yak hair
gill: wine or red tying thread
    overwing: olive yak hair
topping: 4-6 strand black or peacock krystal flash
    eyes: pearlescent decals
    head: 30-minute epoxy
