Jim Kilburn came across a pattern in a sporting goods store in the late 50’s called the California Coachman. He found it to be a successful fly for sea runs cutts, but since it bore no resemblance to the original California Coachmen, and after a few modifications he renamed it the American Coachman. This fly was first tied by J.W. Fricke of San Francisco about 1910. It was originally called the Yellow Royal Coachman in “Trout Flies” circa 1932 by A. Courtney Williams. How it ever became known as the California Coachman is a mystery.
