Thats a gammy octupus, sz 2. They are super sharp, and usually bulls will just inhale a fly, so i get mostly lip hooked fished with this pattern. They are kinda pricy, 6 bux for 25, but i like them alot. Not a normal fly fishing hook but works perfect for this application. Its the same hook people use on moal leaches or for drifting corkies and yarn on gear. Btw, after a little bit of fishing time the red finish wears off revealing a really shinny gold color, it adds a nice bit of flash in there.
That may be the sweetest streamer I have ever seen. Here on the provo we fish size 20s and 22s most of the fall, winter, and spring. It is amazing after fishing such micropatterns for so long that a fish inhales that gargantchuan fly. From your videos it is impossible to not believe it. I'm going to see if I can tie up a few and snag my first bull.
John, i just do it with my fingers. A har packer would not work on this pattern because i tie the rabbit strip along the entire shank for strenght. The hair is more stacked than spun because it does not rotate around the rabbit, but it works find for me. I just compact it with my fingers, although i try to keep it fairly sparse.
