This fish was trippin' me out. It looked like just a jack steelie, but it had faint red cutthroat slashes on it! I should have taken a photo of the slashes, I know, but... It's a wild fish, of course, as I don't think the hatcheries are producing sea-run cutthroat/steelhead hybrids...

    not bad for a yankee
rainbows have faint cutthroat slash marks all the time. i fish a number of streams in BC where the lake run rainbows ALL have slash marks under the throat. Also, when i was on the Sedanka River in Kamchatka, all the rainbows had cutthroat marks. Really strange, but apparently its common. They are not hybrids necessarily, but they do phenotypically look like it.

I got a fish like that last time I was in WA last fall, fishing the cowlitz on the 3rd drift with a bead I hook a fish that looked like a small steelie but had the cut slashes.

fly fishing my way through life
Feel the back of the tongue next time and if there are (hyoid sp?) teeth on it then it is a cutt. If it is smooth it is a bow or steelhead half pounder.
