J’s Hi Tie October Caddis (variation)







Same tying sequence as the Mikulak Sedgehog minus the tail; added a head and legs to the original, since bugs have heads and legs. A trailer tie in poor light so a bit rough around the edges, but it should fish; would have used brown rubber for the legs but I forgot to bring it.


hook - Dai Riki 300 #8
thread - UTC 140 hot orange
wing(s) - deer hair
body/head - 1mm foam orange
legs - medium rubber orange
hackle - brown/ginger

Tail - Golden pheasant crest
Ribbing - Oval gold tinsel
Body - Orange yarn
Throat - Dyed light green & blue hackle fibers
Wing - Moose body hair

A floating, wiggling Crayfish intended for fishing at the bottom with a fast sinking line. IMG_0598.JPG

Casts decently with even a 5 weight line, wiggles like crazy, tracks true as well. Don't know yet if it will catch fish.

Hook: Attitude Streamer 2/0
Diving bill- fly lip colored with red and olive markers
Legs- pumpkin and green silicone
Eyes- 20 pound hard mono, burned colored with sharpie and built up i size with UV resin
belly- white 3 mm foam. Darkened with tan marker
Back- tan 4 mm foam colored with brown and olive markers, covered with a light coat of UV resin
Thread/rib black uni big fly

Superglue on the fly lip tie in and on the hook shank to stabilize the foam

Norm, #5 is a Black bear Greenbutt, with black squirrel substituted for Black bear. Many different types of black hair can be used for this pattern. I often use black calf tail.

Body - Purple antron yarn or uni-stretch
Throat - Dyed blue over dyed orange guinea hen

i have black bear green butt tied like this but not with a yellow throat hackle
