The lyrics thread is fun. Made me go searching for songs I hadnt heard in a long time.
I'm fortunate in that I can have music on in the background while I work.
Most of it is random from the interwebs....and ive stumbled on quite a few gems.
Like these guys....a groovy Greek jam band called Naxatras.
Old stuff: I started buying vinyl (45's then 33's) when I was in junior high (whoa! Before the internet) - when I was in the Navy I scored a big a$$ stereo system and bought LP's at NEX (Navy Exchange). Along came CD's and LP's sort of went away - turntable was tired, amp/receiver worn, the speakers still looking good but too big for our new little house.... so I gave away all my LP's to a friend. Old stuff - seems like LP's are making a real comeback. Seeing and listening to Spirit reminded me of a couple old LPs and songs I just never hear on SeriouslyredundantXM Radio:
My likes in music are all over the place - somehow I overlooked the blues for too many years, this song is one of my favorites; this is a great recording of of a great song.
The King of country. George Straight, George Straight ! then after that Alan Jackson, Dwight Yoakum, Brooks & Dun, Lyle Lovett, Clint Black, Bob Willis and the Texas Playboys, Merle Haggard.
@5weight recommended watching the documentary about The Swampers and Muscle Shoals - I did, it was excellent. Percy Sledge got his start there. I remember how big of a hit When A Man Loves a Woman was while I was in high school, still a great song.
I hope my fellow jazz buffs got to see the recent 'One Last Time' special honoring Tony Bennett's 95th birthday. Having Alzheimers and barely able to walk he was still able to belt out a near flawless performance. Being accompanied by the strangely beautiful and enormously talented Lady Gaga it was the rare television worth watching. Their timing and chemistry was on display once again as it has been since their first recording.
Bennett has been the gold standard of male jazz singers for decades and is probably the best we will ever hear. At this point no heir to the throne is waiting in the wings.
