The lyrics thread is fun. Made me go searching for songs I hadnt heard in a long time.
I'm fortunate in that I can have music on in the background while I work.
Most of it is random from the interwebs....and ive stumbled on quite a few gems.
Like these guys....a groovy Greek jam band called Naxatras.

So....what are you listening to?

Always satisfying to act on received direction, instead of putting it off. No matter how small. One of my favourite songs is E kuu morning dew, check out the english translation . I think it may have been someone like Noelani Ciprianno that did that on youtube. Used to love catching Makaha Sons of Niihau in the 80's when I lived on Kauai.

Taking my 15 year old son to see Sabaton and Kreator next month. He has loved Sabaton since he was four and I got full custody of him. He used to insist I play their albums in the car everywhere we went. I'm really looking forward to this one. I love live music more than most things and sharing that with my son is very exciting. There is few feelings on earth that are better than the excitement in the air the few seconds before a favorite band comes on stage. I can't wait for my son to experience that.

Kreator is one band I've never seen so I'm super stoked for that

Sabaton has been on constant rotation this week since I found out about the show.

And some Kreator.... One of my top three favorite thrash bands ever.

I'm sure we'd get along quite well, Nick.:D Kreator is solid.
I took my son to his first concert when he was 9. Opeth and Katatonia.
We also saw Opeth and Ghost about a year later, and this past summer Katatonia and Caspian.
We are looking forward to Enslaved and WITTR in March.

@Shad - looks like you and i like the same music. I have most all of Jason Isbell albums...maybe all of them. And i bought Drive By Truckers Decoration Day album too. I like the other singer in DBT...is it Billy Bragg? Or am i mixing him up with Son Volt? I'll have to google it. The Nashville Sound album IMO is Isbell's best. (I also overplayed the song Tupelo, a great lyric from that song:
"Haven't been wasted in a long time.
But tonight it feels just fine
Riding home with the windows up
Alone with a plastic cup of real good wine"

(It's not the Lyrics thread so Googled those to make sure i got them right.)

i saw Wilco perform "Hate it Here" on SNL and loved that song immediately. (Usually i FF through the music on SNL.) Great lyrics and i wish i had thought of them for the Lyrics thread.

Jason Isbell and the guys in the DBT are from a small town less than an hour north of where I grew up in Birmingham. AL and we're all about the same age. The singer/songwriters in DBT are Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley. Jason Isbell was also in the DBTs on a few of the early recordings so at that time that single band had 3 of the best living American singer/songwriters.

I remember seeing the band they (Patterson and Mike) were in before the DBTs, Adams Housecat, back in B'ham around 1990 I think. Followed them ever since, seen them live many times and finally had the pleasure of corresponding with and briefly meeting Patterson, who now lives in Portland, last year when he did a solo show in Ballard.

Jason Isbell played just an AMAZING show a couple month back at the Paramont. I was blown away. If you like his work, I would also strongly recommend the live recording of his show at the Alabama Theater. I actually had tickets to his show this weekend in Birmingham - we were going to fly down to see the hometown performance but unfortunately work got in the way.

Another great singer/songwriter with southern roots but a bit more funk in his DNA is JJ Grey and Mofro.

Very nice to see other people on to list enjoying the music I grew up with and continue to follow.

Sort of off topic, but maybe not too far..

Journey and Def Leppard are coming to the Gorge in the fall

I saw both of these bands in the last couple years, and unlike some of the old bands who just make the rounds of casinos and state fairs, these guys still have it. Still really good. Journey's replacement lead singer was a brilliant choice. ALMOST seamless. And Def Leppard is just plain excellent. I think they sound better than they did 25 years ago. Phil Collen is one of my favorite guitarists.

You're never far off when mentioning Wilco, Bragg, and Son Volt in the same breath, @Jojo. Wilco and Son Volt were both born of the same band, Uncle Tupelo. Bragg is not a Drive By Truckers alum, but he did record an album with Wilco. The other (primary) lead of Drive By Truckers is Patterson Hood. All good ones, in my opinion.

My favorite among the lot is Wilco. I first heard them when my friend brought home the AM album. "Box full of Letters" really grabbed me the first time I heard it. Straight up rock song (something of which I may never tire) with great lyrics.

Their next album, Being There, was a long time coming, but it was worth the wait. Jeff Tweedy really started coming into his own artistically on that album. If memory serves, the next album was Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, which I think won them a Grammy and was really good, but I don't think it was their best; Sky Blue Sky gets that honor to my ear, as it showcases not only Tweedy's amazing songwriting, but also some of the most incredible musical interplay to which I've ever exposed my ears. Every member of the current lineup is as good as anyone else out there at what they do. I think Nels Cline (lead guitar) and Glenn Kotche (drums) may be among the very best alive at what they do. For a ridiculous guitar solo, check this out:

Loved Son Volt, too. Jay Farrar is a great talent, too, but different from Tweedy. The Trace album came out just before Wilco's AM, and it may still be my favorite album to listen to while driving at night. I am still fascinated with this song; the guitar sounds and moaning vocals create a "feeling." Don't know how else to describe it.

While these are some of my favorite examples, I am a lover of all styles and origins of music. There's even hip hop out there I really enjoy (you have to look for most of that, but it's there). At the end of the day, though, I'm a rocker at heart.
