Lifetime Warranties

GAT

Dumbfounded
I think the lifetime warranty paln is definitely factored into the cost we pay.
Yes it is. It is very easy to raise the price a small enough on all the products to cover the longer warranties. This is why some of the smaller auto companies offer extra long warranties to get you to buy their vehicles. The price to cover the cost of an extra long warranty is passed on to the consumer so it really is a very cheap system to get customers.

There is no doubt that those in the outdoor product biz are also passing along the cost of extra long warranties to the consumer. They'd go broke if they didn't.

Dumbfounded
If as a business it needs to change you alter subsequent models.
I believe they have a legal obligation to cover all products purchased with a lifetime warranty within the limitations of that lifetime warranty.

They can not suddenly stop honoring the lifetime warranty if the product was purchased years ago when that warranty was in effect.

A warranty is a legal contract and can not suddenly be changed one way or the other.

I bought a pair of Dan Bailey's life time warranty waders and last year they started leaking so I sent them in and in a few days I got a call from one of the nice guys that works there and was told my waders were worn out, unable to be repaired. I said O.K. He said do you want to have them back? I said "No" they leak. He said I'll throw them away. Then hung up.
No, would ya like to buy a new pair, I could give ya a 10% discount, nothing, just hung up. WTF
So I won't buy any Dan Bailey products ever again.

As far as repair vs replace. Almost all US made rods get repaired and almost all Asian rods get replaced. I'm not in the industry but I'd bet the shipping costs to the manufacturer and back are more expensive than rolling a new blank.

Scott and sage (two repair shops I'm familiar with) have old graphite on hand and will roll new sections. In the past few years I've had new sections built for scott arcs, original Scott gs, a sage sp, and a sage rpl. All long after the production was over with. Its usually about 150 to get those rods repaired.
I like Sage a lot, but I will say that they will repair discontinued rods up to a point. I bought a SP 490-2 with the lifetime warrant. On a tip to the factory to have my Sage One 490-4 repaired, I inquired if my SP could be repaired if it broke. And for grins, I asked if the cork handle could be replaced if it got all chipped, etc. I was told that the only thing they could do for the SP was do a tip repair.

With that said, I think the customer service I got on my One was top notch. Only took about a week to repair. When I brought it in, the reception suggested that I sign up for a factory tour. So I did when I went to pick up my rod. It was awesome as I was the only one that had signed up, so I got a one-on-one tour. I am glad I did it.

Bruce,
If that is the case with the SP, you'd think they'd note that on their warranty cost page.
I wonder if that is the case with other older models as well?

Sage’s lifetime warranty is a lifetime, original owner warranty that covers repair or replacement for any manufacturer defect of your Sage rod, blank, or reel. This warranty does not cover direct, indirect, consequential, incidental, or any other type of damage resulting from the use of your Sage product. The warranty also does not cover fire, theft, missing rod sections, intentional breakage, modification or customization of the finished product. Specific to Sage rod blanks, our warranty does not cover damage during the assembly of a Sage rod blank into a finished rod, nor does the warranty extent to any custom work or components added to the blank.

Sage repairs are available, when warranty coverage does not apply, on Sage rods, blanks, and reels. If you are not the original owner of your Sage rod, blank, or reel, or your Sage product was not damaged due to a cause covered by our warranty, we can still repair or replace your Sage product for a nominal fee based on the category and age of your Sage product. To see our repair pricing schedule, please refer to Sage Repair Pricing.

If you aren’t sure if your specific circumstance is a repair or warranty, please reach out directly to the Sage Repair Team at 888-848-7243 or email us with our Contact Us form

So if you shut your car door on it, break it in a ceiling fan, step on it, dog chews the handle off etc..... that is a repair and not a warranty Most rods do not break fishing ..... most are broken away from the river.... other then the ones that take a heavy barbell streamer on too tight a loop which again is Pilot error and not the rod.

I like to think I'm familiar with Sage rods (fly) but I don't recognize the DS/DS 2H (could it be the DS single handers and 2 Handers, I didn't know they made the DS in 2H -spey?) , and Im not sure about the other rods I highlighted in red. but thinking they must have been gear rods.

Well, it’s all following Nordstrom’s and their once liberal show return policy, which is about non-existent now.

Yes and then Costco had a great warranty on electronics (TVs) but then it was abused and put to an end many years ago. But really the abuses by some people goes far beyond product warranties.

Thanks for that information Brian. Maybe I will reach out to Sage with an email to get clarification. I could have misunderstood, but I am pretty sure I heard what I stated.

Agreed, used to be great.

They do have a pretty good plan though for extended warranties on televisions.
I think I paid $21.00 or something like on my last one for five years replacement guarantee / warranty.

I did the SquareTrade extended warranty on a TV I bought at Costco and it came in pretty handy. TV went bad after a couple of years and after proving the requested information (i.e., description of problem and photos) I was given my choice of 3 replacement TVs. Selected the TV and it was shipped directly to me.

I believe that the DS 2H was the "discovery series" 3-piece 2-hander that Sage made during the same time they made the 9140-4 GFL...I had a fishing buddy who had one, and it was a little stiffer than my GFL brownie.

This is really accurate.

I've broken my Sage VXP twice. The first time, it simply snapped while casting. I sent it in, they said it was a defect, then replaced the section and sent it back. I only paid for shipping (which was really fast). The second time, it again broke while casting but in a different area (the middle ferrule). I sent it in, they said it was my fault (I agree, it was), so they said I would be charged for replacing that section. But they also said the tech had found an issue with another ferrule and they would replace that at no cost. I found them to be very fair and helpful.

Sure, it's a limited warranty. But I think it's reasonable.
