My wife and I recently went on an 8-hour whale-watching trip over the Monterey Canyon. We saw 8 male and sub-adult gray whales migrating back to Alaska. We also encountered large (up to 50 x 30 foot) balls of sardines that had been driven to the surface by diving cormorants and common murres and hundreds of Pacific white-sided dolphins. But the real stars of the show were the 9 humpback whales that we encountered. We had great views of lunge-feeding from underneath the bait ball. When not feeding they were breaching or tail slapping. A great day on the water watching several other fishers at work.
