After our two full weeks fly fishing the Forks area rivers, we hiked into a spot above the slide on the Bogachiel on Friday morning. Spoke to some WDFW folks who pulled over in a couple of pontoon boats who were obtaining upstream Steelhead redd data. While we got no positive takes, later in the day we did disturb a large eagle. He was on the bank feeding. This turned out to be a 30# plus native Steelhead judging from the rear portion that remained and the broom sized tail. From the silver, red & green coloration it is possible that its genes were passed along to a future generation. The eagle stayed in a tree across river screeching until we pasted. I will long remember the encounter. Interestingly, this eagle may have readily caught a Steelhead of a rare size few fisherman would have been able to land on either fly or gear tackle given this challenging section of river.
