I am waiting for the van to drive me to the airport in Cabo. I fished 5 days and lost the last due to wind. I fish with Jay Murakoshi who is the outfitter and arranges everything. This is my 10 trip down here, and this year the bait has returned so we can tease the fish up close to the boat. Since there is so much bait around the predators are here in large numbers. There were only 4 of us fishing this week although we saw other fly fishers and lots of bait trollers. We caught a few grande roosters, a few small ones, African pompano, Spanish mackerel, jack cravelle, Amberjack, black skipjack, and of course needle fish. We also saw a few dorado, yellow fin tuna a dorado. On the last day of fishing I lost 3 grande roosters, which was heartbreaking, but my partner caught one about 60 pounds. Here are a few photos. Aloha Phil, nice needle, too bad about the big roo-roos. Bet your arms were sore after those big toros. Good work on the kagami, pompano. How was the new hotel? We will be down there for father's day, hope the mahi show up. Silverfly wants a big ahi, he might change his mind after a 2 hour fight. Thanks for the report, Don

Mems, the dorado were just starting to show up. We saw a few and a few caught. The water temp went up 2 degrees from Wednesday to Thursday. Jay got a 50# yellowfin on bait one day along with some monster skippies. It took him almost an hour on a big boat rod. That is probably a 4 hour fish on a flyrod. NO THANKS! Even those big toro take 50 minutes.

My rod for the roosters was either a Scott Merdian 11 wt or Sage Xi3 10 wt. I use a Rio OBS with an I tip. Flies were 5 inches (tan and olive) because the bait is big.

You think I would know better having suffered lengthy brawls with 25-30# albacore. I'm bringing my 13wt anyway.

All the bait was about 1/3 of the way along Cerralvo Is. Almost all the big fish were at the lighthouse. We also saw more medium fish at Ranchito. We ran down toward La Ventana two days but saw nothing so we did not go all the way.
