That's the only way to go with Carp. If you miss, you're still on the playing field & it often doesn't spook everything out of the area. "Lifting" the rod to set typically pulls the fly out of a Carp's mouth more often than not. When you hook with a strip-set, then you can follow with the rod lift.
Years and years ago the Seattle Times had an article about a commercial carp fishery at Moses Lake. Beach netting, take a small boat row out in a big circle setting the net, then start pulling the net into a 'purse' from the beach.
