Hi All,
Forgive me if this has been covered.
If I was going to tie up a few flies for SRC, what you you tie?
Back in Michigan, I primarily fished for river smallmouth, and used just 3 different flies. If I didn't catch anything on those three, they just weren't biting and I called it a day.
Any similar advice to a newbie?
thanks, richard
The seasons make a difference. Check out Capt. Nick Claytons videos on Youtube for a start. If I had only three to choose from I'd use a squimp, Miyawaki popper, and a small sparse baitfish pattern that doubles as a chum fry. Lots of info on this site and great people that know way more than me.
Lots of good suggestions.
I’d add a few euphausiid and amphipod patterns to the mix as cutts can get picky as winter sets in when they are keying in on those.
I’d also add a polychaete worm pattern or two to your box.

And here are some of the flies I've been carrying lately (fall/winter on the beaches): View attachment 218206
If you ever want to go, let me know. I'm out of town this next week, but otherwise I'm always happy to share a beach, flies, and the little I know about the fishery.
I'm new at SRC in the salt, and had tied up a bunch of patterns from books (especially Les Johnson's book). Went out 6-7 times with no luck and then went into Pacific Flyfishers for some advice. Ben said "more baitfishy" and sold me this fly. Next day, caught my first SRC and several more on it. I've been tying copies and variations of it since.
