Hit some local water the other day and noticed this guy on my boot when I was packing it up. Figured it's a sow or scud, thoughts? Is there a major difference between the two?

That is a sowbug (like the pillbugs in your garden). Sowbugs are flattened dorso-ventrally. Scuds, very closely related, are laterally flattened.
