If you had added being one of the flying tigers in China probably would have made it too easy.

Guess I spent too much time watching Black Sheep Squadron.

I’ll do some research and have it in tomorrow. Got some ideas already.

I wasn't born there, but lived in the PNW a very long time.
One of my oldest friends and fishing buddies was a pretty damn good fighter pilot.
We both were flyfishing celebrities of sorts, but more famous outside the flyfishing world.
I'll always be No. 1.

Defeats the purpose of trivia being based on knowledge you have but my wild guess is Wes Drain.

Sorry, Rob, that's not it. Here's a couple more clues (I may have made it too difficult - when someone gets it, I'll explain my selection).

I lived on a storied steelhead river for many years.
There's a Paul H. Young bamboo rod model named for me.

Leland Miyawaki - not sure about the last item, but wouldn't surprise me..

Nope, not them. The person is deceased, if that helps narrow it down. Here are another couple of clues (and I'll repeat them all here, so you see them all together at once):

I'm most widely known (not by flyfishers) for what I accomplished while "based" in New England.
I really enjoyed catching small stealhead.

;)
