I stopped by Lone Lake on Thursday. They have closed it because of the toxic algae. In the past, they just put up warning signs but this time they have a formal closure. Just FYI.

Response from Island County. Not terribly insightful-

I got forwarded your message and I'll try to answer the question:

When have algae problems typically dissipated in the past with seasonal cooling?
Algae blooms in Lone Lake dissipate usually around the fall season between October and November. The temperature change the conditions which prevents algal growth, slowing the release of algal toxins .

If you have any more question or concerns please feel free to message me.

Sincerely,

Not sure the correlation between temps on pass and lone - but we left pass after a couple hours on Saturday because all the fish were lethargic - water temp was about 62. I haven’t fished lone this time of year but I will wait a few weeks, especially given the weather this weekend. Unless someone else with experience chimes in and says the fish will be in good shape :)

After seeing the October 5 results, I wrote Island County this morning asking if there were punitive actions for fishing during the closure. There are none.

I’m not planning to drink lake water and I’ll take responsibility for my actions, if they cause personal harm.

They wrote back indicating that they’ll hopefully open the lake next Monday (12th). Someone once told me that hope was delayed disappointment. We’ll see. But I’m jonesing big time and quite willing to tempt the devil to fish Lone.
