A really interesting statement from a colleague of mine, “You can go to the salad bar and get lettuce, cherry tomatoes, sprouts and cucumbers or you can get hate and anger”. Just sayin’. Peace, Ed
I have a little girl and I hope to hell I raise her to be more mentally tough than this. Isn't it a bit condescending to assume women can't handle stupid fly names? Most of the women I know in the sport are tough both mentally and physically. They usually have a sense of humor too.
For a man who chooses such a craft, I can begin to imagine the names he will be called - are you OK with that, and most likely from the individuals who are saying "toughen up" on this forum?
It means you believe in the new group think and cease to think for yourself. Oh yeah and everything and I mean everything is racist or sexist. And when you enter a debate yell "racist" or other such equivalent and run away without making any points but proclaim victory.
Such a great thread , glad I stepped away from the tying page. So much education, I now know what a merkin is and there seems to be some bromances budding here! Spring is in the air !
I don't think there's anything else to really be said on this topic. I think it comes down to being considerate to one another. I don't think the provocative fly names are all that cool. They are tacky at best and offensive to some at worst. I get that there are vestiges in culture and sport that are traditionally male dominated and that the environment may not be that welcoming to outsiders if they don't fit the traditional profile. That sucks and we all should examine that and yes do your part. Fly fishing should be a welcoming thing for any that have interest.
Yes, you may be at a loss, but you do have internet access I see, so Google away and all things merkin shall be yours...
Fun merkin facts are moments away...
-Reading this thread makes me *so* glad I married a woman who, if she even noticed the names, would respond with an eye-roll at best and would be more likely to laugh, and ask me to hand her one if it was catching. "What'd you catch that one on?" "Turkish Whorehouse." "Cool - gimme one."
-It also helped me pick out a great name for the next leechy fly I cook up. I think I'm going to call it "The Dark Triad."
"Signaling virtuous victimhood as indicators of Dark Triad personalities Abstract
We investigate the consequences and predictors of emitting signals of victimhood and virtue. In our first three studies, we show that the virtuous victim signal can facilitate nonreciprocal resource transfer from others to the signaler. Next, we develop and validate a victim signaling scale that we combine with an established measure of virtue signaling to operationalize the virtuous victim construct. We show that individuals with Dark Triad traits-Machiavellianism, Narcissism, Psychopathy-more frequently signal virtuous victimhood, controlling for demographic and socioeconomic variables that are commonly associated with victimization in Western societies. In Study 5, we show that a specific dimension of Machiavellianism-amoral manipulation-and a form of narcissism that reflects a person's belief in their superior prosociality predict more frequent virtuous victim signaling. Studies 3, 4, and 6 test our hypothesis that the frequency of emitting virtuous victim signal predicts a person's willingness to engage in and endorse ethically questionable behaviors, such as lying to earn a bonus, intention to purchase counterfeit products and moral judgments of counterfeiters, and making exaggerated claims about being harmed in an organizational context."
So my wife has been thru some shit......I spose if she were so inclined she could be offended about crude fly names, or similar stuff....but she doesn't let any of it bother her.....she's a smart-ass.....she's also got a heart of gold.....I mean she took pity on my sorry ass! Haha.
Just leave my drinks alone;
As with many cocktails, there are a couple of claims to the creation of the Harvey Wallbanger. One is that it may have been created as an "all I got left in the bar" drink. Supposedly, the host of a party in the mid-60s had only vodka, orange juice, and Galliano available. After a couple of these drinks, a guest named Harvey was found to be banging his head against the wall and cursing the drink that caused him his misery.
That's a fun story, but it's not very believable. The accepted truth attributes the Harvey Wallbanger's creation to Donato "Duke" Antone who owned Duke's Backwatch Bar in Hollywood. It was at this Sunset Boulevard joint in 1952 that Antone created the cocktail. He named it after a local surfer and bar regular named Tom Harvey.
Apprehensively googling “merkin fly pattern “, before I got to the “f”, being the shitty typer I am, the disturbing images had already popped. How outrageously offended I was. I didn’t really understand the purpose or gender this fashion items intended for ? Maybe Swimmy the fashionista can chime in on that? As for the fly, we don’t have crabs over here in our lakes, so I have never tied one, but is similar to a good sculpin pattern that I believe doesn’t have a derogatory name so can’t think of it right now, but will remember when I’m not trying to,...
I'm remembering the good old days where no one gave a shit about anyone else that you weren't close to and that was fine. It's weird to me that people have as much time as they do to knit pick the stupidest, most meaningless garbage. I want to go back to the time when getting up and going to work was the biggest worry of the day. Now someone else's dumb assed problem has to be mine too? The thought of the future being in charge by the young people of today is incredibly scary to me based solely on stupidity and sensitivity of shit that really doesn't matter. If you don't like a fly name make one similar to it and rename it like everyone else does in fly tying.
But I think you pointed out the crux of the matter, by saying that you remember the good old days. Where you remember only having to worry about going to work. The youth you talk about are not the only ones concerned with the fact that for some groups, there never has been the good old days and they had far more to worry about than you did. If you think that this issue is just about the name of a fly that you don't find offensive and that you think is stupid to even think about, then I really think you are missing the point.
You talk about going back to a time where you don't have to worry about fly names. You don't have to now, but maybe you should.
I don't know who you are or your circumstances, but it's obvious you can't be swayed buy a different point of view so I will not try. I also don't know how old you think I am but from what you wrote you think I'm young, I'm 64 yrs old and ass beatings are a distant memory, and never solved anything IMHO. So I hope you have a nice life bro.
You sound like a 18yo. My bad bro. When the world turns to mad max road warrior; and if you don't think it's heading that way you must be under a decent rock, you and your feelings will be the first to go.

People have been saying the world is going towards Mad Max since, well, before the movie was made. I do agree these people with shit for brains that buy into these Q conspiracies might speed that process up, though.
I'm saying that it was helpful, with proof, that is the point that you are missing. Feel free to disagree if you feel you need to, but to do so, in my opinion, is done so with willful ignorance of facts.
Can you imagine a show called, “Leave It To Beaver” or a character named “Buckwheat” in this day and age. I loved ”The Three Stooges”. Dang; just got 4 new fly names. RAD! Safe Travels, Ed
Rainy’s flies sells Gallup’s patterns. They just call this one dungeon. Jesse or Rainy must have found the name offensive and shortened it.
