On 8/27/2021, @Jake, @Clarkman, @Steve_S, @tyler, and I did a tuna trip out of Westport with @Nick Clayton and his deckhand Evan of All Rivers and Saltwater Charters.

We had a great time. Nick and Evan did a great job getting us into fish. Most of us did not have any prior albacore fly fishing experience and they made it an excellent time.

At the end of the day we end up with 21 fish, which we were very happy with.

Nick and Evan worked very hard to put us on fish and we had some steady fishing for a while. I highly recommend booking him for a trip, especially if you want to fly fish.

The majority, if not all, the fish were caught on the troll or on the slide after hooking the first fish on the troll.

We did multiple stops after hooking fishing on the troll but the fish only seemed interested in trolled flies. Every time that the boat would begin trolling, the fish would start hitting flies. The other bait boats were also experiencing the same results.

Multiple flies and colors worked, as long as it was in the water.

Overall it was a great trip and experience. This is an amazing fishery and fishing with Nick was a lot of fun. I learned a lot from the experience. Definitely looking forward to doing it again next year.

@Jake, @Clarkman, @Steve_S, @tyler, and @Nick Clayton, please feel free to add additional details and photos.

Below are some of mine and others pictures from the day. Feel free to add more photos, guys.

Great account and photos, Nick! I don’t have much of substance to add except to say that if it weren’t for our dedicated and focused captain at the wheel 98ED6640-21E5-4F5F-BE23-85C97E240365.jpeg
And an always-alert deckhand 27B34F11-C812-4339-919A-ADA80599704E.jpeg
I wouldn’t have learned that albacore are lousy kissers. DEF507D3-5C29-4447-826D-6647F9C0C29C.jpeg
I don’t know if it’s the fishy breath, or the “fish lips”, but it’s definitely one of the more sub-par kisses I’ve had. 2 out of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars for the day, though. Great crew, great companions, and great fishing!

Sashimi on the boat and again last night, ceviche tomorrow, and smoked tuna belly for days to come.

As usual Capt. Nick and crew put us on the fish. Can't say enough about how fishy and hard working Nick is.
A bit sporty on the way out and Mark blew by us in the big boat which was fun to watch.
We had a great group and as mentioned several if us new to the tuna game. Once all put fish in the boat and had a feel for the game the fun really began.
Multiple doubles and a couple triple hook ups were exciting and had all laughing.
Ride in was pretty smooth, dinner was nice with good company and slept the sleep of the dead. Fantastic day!

Is it possible to have too much fun? Well, that sure looks like it! Great report and photos! Thanks.
What weight rod are you using?

I tend to have a lot of fun on the water. I love my job very much, and even on the not so great days I have fun. This trip though was super, super fun for me! Fantastic group of guys out there. Didn't take long at all for you all to figure out the program.

This has been the strangest albacore season I've done down here and this trip was right on par. Overall we had a lot of action but as mentioned when the boat was stopped we didn't have a lot of action. Reminded me of the last couple fly trips we did last year. We'd hook up on the troll, hook them stripping on the slide, but when stopped the fish just wouldn't really come up and play with us. Jake did hook two casting, stack mending, and fishing deep while we were stopped, and I believe we had two or three other grabs while stopped that didn't stick. I know Randy's big orange fly got hit on a couple casts from the bow for sure. Unlike last October the fish would only be under us for a brief moment every stop. Just no attention span.

The guys fishing bait were experiencing the exact same thing. Get them on the troll but not getting many while stopped, even fishing bait.

The bait dock folks have struggled to find anchovies this year and we are on bait rations as a result, but that wasn't the issue. They just didn't want to come up and really get going for anyone. The fish just haven't settled down and gotten comfortable anywhere this year. We went to the same zone yesterday and they were mostly gone and we had a fairly slow day. Hopefully their behavior starts getting closer to normal now that September is just around the corner.

Regardless, that day was a blast! Super fishy crew, and a lot of fun.

Weather cancel today. First day off in a while. Felt pretty damn nice to sleep in! Back at it tomorrow.

Thanks for coming out fellas!

I brought an 11/12 and a 13 (hoping for bigger fish and/or bluefin). I think the most common weight was a 12, but @Clarkman was using a 10wt fiberglass rod at one point.
I will say, my 10wt Iconoglass handled that size of fish pretty easily. I'm not sure I'd want to hook a 30+ lber with it though.
