What do you tie on a 4/0 hook? How about 400 of them

Do you tie flies on a 4/0 hook? If so, please post a picture in your reply to this message.

Somehow I ended up with 400 size 4/0 Sealy hooks. I have no idea what I'd tie on hooks this big so I'm just going to give them away. The boxes say 1764.B on them.

If you tie flies on hooks like this, you can have them for the cost of shipping ($3?) if you send me two of the flies.

Halcyon,

It is refreshing to see a very well-tied Glasso Spey with a tented hackle tip wing that is not overly long and a body that begins in front of the hook point in the manner Glasso tied them himself, instead of all the ones I've seen over the last 18 years that have knife-edge hackle tip wings that go out beyond the bend of the hook.

Good on you for letting others see how Glasso tied and proportioned his flies.

FT,
Thank you for the kind words. Coming, as it does, from someone who actually knew Syd Glasso I take your comments as praise indeed.

Halcyon,

I must correct you. I didn't know Glasso, he died before I moved to Washington state. I have two friends and several acquaintances who knew him well and who fished with him. All have flies he tied and one has several dozen of Syd's flies, including full-dressed feather wings. I know another fellow. now in his 80's, who was taught how to tie spey flies by Syd. And I've been fortunate to have met Dick Wentworth several times when I lived in Port Angeles at a fly shop that closed up when the owner retired some 8 years ago and I asked Wentworth to critque some of my Glasso speys since he was able to tie them as well as Syd.

I've just been fortunate to have seen many spey flies that were tied by him and several of his full-dressed featherwings, including a BLACK RANGER he tied back in 1960 that he gave to the mechanic who kept his '50's era Porche running (the mechanic's wife showed the fly to me and talked to me extensively about how much she and her husband liked Syd). I also had some of the flies he tied in my hands (not in a frame) in order to take a very close look at them.

At any rate, your fly has the look of Syd's flies with the same tented wing, the same wing and body proportions, the same sparser hackle, and the head tied back some from the hook's eye as Syd did. And as you know, learning to tie them this way takes time and effort, but once the skill is acquired, it is was well worth the time it took.

I've tied some replicas of large king flies on 4/0 and recently I tied up some swap flies, mice on 2/0 front with a 4/0 butt hook. Personally on the ones I kept for myself I cut off the front hook. I need to get some more hooks and tie up some more. They were fun and took a while. I actually cut my own rabbit strips from a hide, spun deer hair heads and moose mane whiskers...oh and dyed black chamois as a tail. I have no idea if bass, pike or even steelhead will hit them, but they are supposed to opportunisticly eat mice when the go for an inadvertant swim. (by the way, these mice flies ended up about 3" long from the front of the nose to the butt of the fur body...tails add more length of course)

Sure, if you have any I'll take some. Maybe when I get motivated I'll tie up some more mice and send one or two back your way. It is the first time I've tied them (for a recent swap) and we don't have our flies returned yet, but I'm hopeful to get reports that someone caught something big nasty and toothy on one of my little rats.
