There are subtle differences in shape shape of genitalia, which can be examined with a microscope to identify adult Pteronarcys to species. Those "keys" would be available in the references listed on Ethan Bright's Aquatic Insects Of Michigan Pteronarcys Identification Keys page.
I guess if one has studied moth balls one has the skill to sex salmonflies.
