Flock after flock of sandhill cranes flying north over the Tri-Cities this week.

Anyone know where they hang out in central washington in the spring?

I know theres a festival, and I've driven through the Columbia NWR in March, without seeing any.

do they hang out in farm fields?

Yes they tend to land in fields. I have seen large flocks on the ground west of Othello.

I did remote waterfowl surveys in Alaska one summer and sandhill cranes were quite the annoyance. We would cut trails though the woods and then army crawl through brush to reach these ponds and lakes to count ducks. Then sometimes the sandhill cranes would spoil all our hard work. One wrong step and those things would squawk and alert the pond and we would just stand there watching hundreds of birds fly off! haha. We would have to do the whole survey over again.... beautiful birds but I came to despise those cranes!!
