March Fly Salon

Sorry for taking so long, just got over being sick and have been fishing pretty hard the last couple days. leaving again here in a minute. considering the month i figured we'd do our best March Brown patterns. whether nymph, emerger, dry, cripple, etc. show us what your favorite pattern for matching this insect are. i'll post photos of some i'm working on later. looking forward to seeing some new patterns!

I was testing to see if extended body dun patterns worked better than traditional parachute patterns and figured the March Brown hatch would be a good one for comparing the two different styles. The MB hatch goes on for many months in The Willamette Valley so I had plenty of time to test the two.

Here's the extended body pattern:

Here's the parachute style:

What I found was the extended body pattern worked no better than the simple parachute pattern and in fact, I don't think it worked as well. As it was a toss-up at best, I don't bother tying MBs with an extended body... unless I want to catch more anglers than fish -- the extended body pattern is kind'a cool -- but as far as working better... nope.

I haven't fished these, but tied them earlier this month playing around with different ideas and an extended body. I'll give them a go and hope trout are still pretty stupid early in the season.

Just call me Jon
Haven't fished it, but I think it might work.

March Brown with a bit of black ice dub...which is actually more purple to me, which is what I was going for. Because as Derek Young mentioned, trout and purple go together like peas and carrots. Topped off with pearl flashabou.

if anyone is still interested. after coming down between Riseform and Porterhause, the winner is Riseform. my decision was based solely on the fact that i like fishing dries/emergers more than nymphing. all flies submitted were awesome ties and it was a pretty hard decision. if anyone's still interested in these the balls in your court Riseform.
