Reel for 13'3" 7 weight Sage 7133-4 VXP

#1
Hi, all. I just picked up my first spey rod and I'm in the process of outfitting myself to begin steelheading. I've read that balancing the rod with the proper reel is a major consideration in spey rod outfits and I wanted to see if anyone had any input on reels that would match the Sage 7 weight I just picked up. I am considering a Lamson Litespeed 4, but was wondering if I would be better off with something heavier. Considering a Tibor but not sure if the Everglades or Riptide would be better here. Any advice or opinions would be hugely appreciated.

Do not go with lamson. They are just too light. They are fantastic single hand reels. If you want a good reel that will balance that rod I would get the ross cla 5 or 6. If u want an old school clicker look at those as well.

Thanks, D! Good input. Any if the Tibor Everglades or Riptide would be a better fit? The everglades weighs 8.5 and the riptide weighs 9.5. I feel like the riptide might be overkill.

Riptide. The Everglades may not have enough capacity for the lines you end up using. On the classic side of things, a Hardy Marquis Salmon 2, Bougle or Perfect 4 will work well.

The Saraciones are beautifu,l for sure. Maybe in a few years. I got a great deal on my VXP so my savings there are allowing me to splurge just a bit on my reel. I'm also selling some rods and reels that I'm not using a lot since I moved out west so we're kind of talking about Monopoly money here.

In that case. Do not pass go, and give me 200 dollars.

I personally think weight does not matter much, but I like large capacity and as fast a pickup speed as possible.

If you are just getting started, try an Echo Ion 8/10. It has plenty of mass, plenty of line capacity (put lots of backing on to take advantage of the large spool diameter) and give it a go. Some people don't like the Echo drag, but its been enough for steelhead. Either way you'd only be out about $50. If you cannot find one for $50, shoot me a PM. I'll sell you one for that + postage :)
