The very essence of gear fishing is having to attach "gear" to your line in order to cast and present your “something” to the fish. So by the very nature of having to attach "gear" to your fly line in order to present your “something”, you are now GEAR fishing. In my mind, FLY fishing is determined/defined by presenting a fly with, a fly rod, and a fly line (weather it be sinking, floating, t-10, t-100, etc), and can still be cast "well". Nothing more is needed to be attached to the fly line, end of story.
